I hope more people read this and take it to heart. The sheer amount of kooky bills introduced into state legislatures is staggering. But I feel like most people also don't realize the average state legislator is, well, let's say a few rungs below a Jimmy Stewart character in terms of political seriousness.
This is an excellent overview. Our political system is riven with inefficiencies, and one of the most unfortunate is that so much legislative activity takes place purely for show, as you point out.
Also, just to make sure I'm clear on this: when you say that state legislatures are "bicameral," what you mean is that they act according to the commands of the gods, who speak to them directly. Right?
I don’t have a question, but I am leaving a comment to express my gratitude (and, let’s be honest, awe) for this post. I like to think of myself as politically knowledgeable, but really that knowledge comes from “I’m Just a Bill” from Schoolhouse Rock. I didn’t know anything about how legislation works in the real world. So thank you for teaching me some useful information, and also for that beautiful extended metaphor about the wall at the end.

Liberty bill guy got elected to six terms! SIX!

Yes, exactly. That’s how the Constitution was handed down in 1776, as well.
I can’t wait for them to gain the ability to introspect. Should be amazing.

This was incredibly enlightening. I will be sharing this for sure.
Thank you!
